Russellville boys soccer stays perfect in area play

The Russellville boys soccer team remained unbeaten in Class 4A-5A, Area 16 action with an 8-0 home victory March 31 against West Limestone.

Eighth-ranked Russellville (11-2, 3-0 Area 16) jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead on the heels of senior striker Marvin Betancourt’s fourth hat trick and two goals from junior striker Andy Alonso. Kenner Perez and Cedrick Mojica each tallied a pair of goals, while Jorge Bahena added one against the Wildcats (9-5, 3-2).

In 13 games, Betancourt is pacing the Golden Tigers with 23 goals and Alonso with 16. Russellville is outscoring opponents 73-11, producing six shutouts by goalkeepers Jesus Betancourt and Darian Arzola-Lopez and averaging more than five goals per match.

The Russellville girls (1-9, 1-2) got on the scoreboard against West Limestone (6-6-1, 2-3) but it wasn’t enough, falling 2-1 after conceding two first-half goals to Haven Nichols. Russellville midfielder Gisel Perez scored her first-ever goal in the second half.

The boys and girls teams continue area play this week, hosting Danville April 6 and traveling to West Limestone April 7 before facing East Limestone twice in Week 9.
