Third-ranked Red Bay gets two wins

Red Bay 69, Hamilton 47
The third ranked Red Bay Tigers rolled to an easy win over the Hamilton Aggies last week 69-47.
Red Bay led Hamilton 20-10 at the end of the first quarter and 42-24 at halftime. The Tigers extended their lead to 53-32 by the end of the third quarter and cruised to the win.
Darby Madden and Allie Kennedy led Red Bay with 20 points and 19 points respectively. Reagan Kuykendall added eight points. Morgan Pierce and Carlie Lindley scored six points each. Carlee Humphres and Mallori Miller had four points each. Savannah Shaw scored three points.
Red Bay 43, Marshall Academy 29
The Red Bay Tigers scored an easy win in the Robertson Shootout in Booneville, Miss., Saturday, 43-29.
Red Bay jumped out to a 14-5 first quarter lead. Marshall Academy played the Tigers even in the second half to make the halftime score 26-17. Red Bay was able to extend their lead to 39-22 by the end of the third quarter before letting the air out of the ball in the fourth quarter.
Allie Kennedy scored 26 points to lead Red Bay. Darby Madden added nine points, eight of which came from the free throw line. Reagan Kuykendall scored four points. Carlee Humphres and Morgan Pierce scored two points each.
Tharptown 44, Waterloo 31
The Tharptown Wildcats rolled over the Waterloo Cougars 44-31. The Wildcats roster was depleted by injury, but younger players stepped up and played big. Ninth grader Adrianna Borden led the Wildcats with 14 points and 13 rebounds and went 7-for-7 from the field.
Tharptown jumped out ahead of Waterloo in the first quarter 10-4. The Wildcats outscored Waterloo 11-8 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 21-12 at halftime. Tharptown extended their lead even further to 36-22 by the end of the third quarter before coasting to the win.
Catie Dawson followed Borden with ten points. Anslee Bottoms finished with seven points. Sierra Robinson and Klaudia Harris scored four points each. Kaylee Bain had three points, and Ameliah Dawson had two points.
Vina 52, Athens Bible 34
The Vina Lady Red Devils came from behind in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to take a commanding lead at halftime 26-17. Sarah Johnson had eight of her 12 points in the second half. Emma Humphres had five points in the third, and Abby Hester had five points in the fourth period as Vina outscored Athens 26-17 in the second half for the final score of 52-34.
Humphres finish with 14 points, and Hester finish with nine points. Kaitlyn King (9), Gracie Raper (4), Mary Clingan (2) and Maddie Raper (2) also scored for Vina.
Vina 53, Brilliant 23
The Vina Red Devils jumped all over the Brilliant Tigers in the first period. Abby Hester and Emma Humphres had five points each as Vina took a 18-5 lead after the first quarter. Humphres finished with ten points and 11 rebounds. In the second quarter, Sarah Johnson scored all four of her points, and Kaitlyn King hit a three toward the end of the quarter as Vina increased its lead to 29-10. King hit four more threes in a row in the third period as Vina increased the lead to 46-18. King finish with 25 points and seven three pointers.
Abby Hester made the AHSAA record books in this game with a career-high of 16 assists. Hester now has 207 for the season and 701 for her high school career as a varsity player.
Others scoring for Vina were Gracie Raper with five points; Sara Scott with two points; and Hester with seven for the final tally.
Hackleburg 60, Belgreen 54
A sluggish start to the second half kept the Belgreen Bulldogs from upending the Hackleburg Panthers on their home turf last week, losing 60-54.
Belgreen led Hackleburg 8-6 at the conclusion of the first quarter, and Bulldogs extended their lead to 26-22 by halftime. Hackleburg stormed out of the locker room in the second half, outscoring Belgreen 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 42-37 lead. The Panthers held off the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 21 points, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter alone. Katie Dempsey followed with nine points, Gabbie Moore with eight points, Shellie Barber had six points (including two three-pointers in the fourth quarter), Ansley Tate added four points, Jasmine Martin had three points, and Brianna Wood and Kaycee Wilson scored two points each.
East Lawrence 57, Phil Campbell 56
The Phil Campbell Bobcats came up just short in a matchup with the East Lawrence Eagles last week, 57-56.
Darby Elliott scored 16 of her game high 24 points in the first quarter, helping the Bobcats to an 18-9 lead. The Eagles recovered in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 18-9 to tie the game at 27-27 at halftime. Both teams stayed on each other’s heels for the rest of the game. The game remained tied at the end of the third quarter 39-39, but East Lawrence gained the slight advantage in the final period of play, 18-17, to get the win.
Leading the way for the Bobcats was Elliott, who also had five steals in the game. Abby Davis followed with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Ten of Davis’ points came in the fourth quarter. Chloe Roberson and Dakota Elliott scored five points each. Bethany Harris and Carley Nix added two point each for the Bobcats. The Bobcats were 22-for-28 from the free throw line.
Belmont (Miss.) 48, Red Bay 30
The Red Bay Tigers, fresh off a record setting seventh-consecutive Franklin County Tournament championship, struggled against their rivals from across the state line, Belmont, 48-30.
Belmont got the best of the Tigers in all four quarters. Belmont jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead over Red Bay and extended their lead to 22-13 by halftime. In the third quarter, Belmont outpaced Red Bay 13-11 to make the score 35-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
Darby Madden led Red Bay with 12 points. Allie Kennedy added eight points, and Reagan Kuykendall finished with four points. Carlee Humphres, Morgan Pierce and Carlie Lindley scored two points each.
Phillips 71, Belgreen 35
The Phillips Bears jumped on the Belgreen Bulldogs from the start of the game last week and didn’t let up, taking down their area rivals 71-35.
Phillips led Belgreen 17-7 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 37-19 by halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Bears led the Bulldogs 55-31 before cruising to the win in the fourth quarter.
Katie Dempsey led Belgreen with 11 points. Emma Dempsey added eight points, Shellie Barber scored six points, Cammie Terrell finished with five points, Jasmine Martin had three points, and Autumn Bragwell had two points.
Colbert Heights 54, Tharptown 44
The Tharptown Wildcats jumped out to an early lead over the Colbert Heights Wildcats last week but couldn’t hang on, losing 54-44.
Tharptown led Colbert Heights 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. Colbert Heights took the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Tharptown 15-7 to take a 26-23 halftime lead. Colbert Heights extended their lead to 38-29 in the third quarter and outpaced Tharptown 16-15 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Brooke Daily led Tharptown with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Catie Dawson followed with 11 points and seven rebounds. Aly Vandiver (6), Linda Bahena (5), Sierra Robinson (4), Klaudia Harris (3) and Amelia Dawson (2) also scored for Tharptown.
Lamar County 51, Phil Campbell 43
The Phil Campbell Bobcats’ second half comeback effort was not enough to overcome a strong start by the Lamar County Bulldogs as they won an area contest, 51-43.
Lamar County jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead over the Bobcats. The Bulldogs extended their lead over Phil Campbell to 30-15 by halftime. The Bobcats made a strong comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Lamar County 17-9 to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 39-32, but Lamar County stopped the Bobcat comeback midway through the fourth quarter to hold on to the lead and get the win.
Abby Davis led Phil Campbell with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Darby Elliott scored seven points and had six steals. Dakota Elliott (6), Megan Bullock (4), Bethany Harris (3), Chloe Roberson (2) and Carly Nix (2) also scored.
Boys
Belgreen 68, Phillips 33
The Belgreen Bulldogs dominated the Phillips Bears last week in an area matchup last week 68-33. The Bulldogs are knocking on the door of the Top Ten 1A teams in the state as the season enters the closing weeks.
Mason Bragwell led Belgreen with 16 points. Brant Bragwell followed with 13 points. Payton Scott and Eli Hister scored seven points each. Joseph Welch (6), Logan Seay (4), Adam Green (4), Grayson Moore (4), Seth Taylor (3), Jacob Mayberry (2) and Ashlee Britton (2) also scored for Belgreen.
East Lawrence 56, Phil Campbell 48
Coming off two straight tough Franklin County Tournament games likely left the Phil Campbell Bobcats with some tired legs Monday night as they came up short against the East Lawrence Eagles 56-48.
East Lawrence jumped out to slight advantage over Phil Campbell in the first quarter 9-4. The Bobcats outscored the Eagles 15-13 in the second quarter to cut into the East Lawrence lead. The Eagles led the Bobcats by three at halftime 22-19. East Lawrence got those two points back in the third quarter, outpacing the Bobcats 13-11 to take a 35-30 lead into the final period of play. Both teams picked up the scoring pace in the fourth quarter, but East Lawrence got the better of Phil Campbell 21-18 to get the win.
Peyton Thomas and Thomas Baker led Phil Campbell with 13 point each. Brody Nix followed with ten points. Gage Roberson added eight points. Rhett Benford and Joe Hardy finished with two points each.
Colbert Heights 78, Tharptown 69
The Colbert Heights Wildcats used a strong second quarter to propel them past the Tharptown Wildcats last week 78-69.
Tharptown led early on, taking a 13-11 first quarter lead. Colbert Heights piled up 25 points in the second quarter to take a 36-25 halftime lead. Both teams found the scoring touch in the second half, with Tharptown outpacing Colbert Heights in the third quarter 24-22 to cut Colbert Heights lead to 58-49 going into the final period of play. Tharptown outscored Colbert Heights 20-19 in the fourth quarter, but that wasn’t enough to get the win.
Levi McCormack led Tharptown with 20 points, spurred by four three-pointers in the second half. Mikey Rosson followed with 17 points. Matt Hall added 11 points. Cole Daniel (8), Miseal Saldana (5), Alex Argueta (3), Carson Petree (2) and Joel Mojica (2) also scored for Tharptown.
Hackleburg 75, Belgreen 71
The Hackleburg Panthers stormed past the Belgreen Bulldogs in the fourth quarter last week to pick up big area upset win 75-71.
Hackleburg opened up a big first quarter lead, outpacing Belgreen 22-14. The Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game and eventually took the lead. The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 19-16 in the second quarter and 24-13 in the third quarter to take a 57-51 lead into the final period of play. Hackleburg, however, found their rhythm and blew past the Bulldogs 24-14 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Five Bulldogs were in double figures in the game: Mason Bragwell with 12 points; Seth Taylor, Grayson Moore, and Brant Bragwell with 11 points each; and Jacob Mayberry with ten points. Adam Green scored eight points, Logan Seay finished with two points, and Payton Scott had one point.
Lamar County 63, Phil Campbell 57
The Lamar County Bulldogs upended the Phil Campbell Bobcats in a critical area game last week 63-57. The Lamar County win made Sulligent the outright Area winner and host of the area tournament. Had the Bobcats won the game, there would have been a coin toss between the teams to make the determination.
Phil Campbell led Lamar County 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Bobcats extended their lead to 26-20 at halftime. Lamar County came out strong in the second half, outscoring Phil Campbell 18-13 in the third quarter to cut the Bobcats’ lead to one, 39-38. Lamar County outpaced Phil Campbell 25-18 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Thomas Baker led Phil Campbell with 17 points. Peyton Thomas followed with 15 points. Gage Roberson and Joe Hardy added eight points each. Brody Nix scored four points, and Rhett Benford and Hayden Copeland had two points each.
Waterloo 56, Tharptown 51
The Tharptown Wildcats fell to the Waterloo Cougars in overtime 56-51 last week.
Waterloo led the Wildcats 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. Tharptown outscored Waterloo 17-16 in the second quarter to cut the Cougars’ lead to one at halftime 28-27. Waterloo extended their lead to 40-35 in the third quarter, but Tharptown came back to tie Waterloo and send the game into overtime in the fourth quarter. Tharptown was only able manage a single point on the extra period of play.
Levi McCormack led Tharptown with 13 points. Matt Hall added 11 points, and Alex Argueta had ten points. Mikey Rosson had eight points, Cold Daniel six points, and Misael Saldana finished with three points.
