County girls teams report wins, losses

Phil Campbell 43, Belgreen 40

Phil Campbell held off a fourth quarter Belgreen comeback Friday night as the Bobcats edged out the Bulldogs 43-40.

Belgreen held a 6-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Phil Campbell outscored Belgreen 11-5 in the second quarter to take a 15-11 lead at halftime. Phil Campbell extended their lead to 34-23 by the end of the third quarter. Belgreen stormed back in the fourth quarter outscoring Phil Campbell 17-9, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the Bobcats’ lead.

Abby Davis led the Bobcats with 22 points and ten rebounds. She was 9-for-12 from the free throw line. Chloe Roberson added seven points. Dakota Elliott and Carley Nix scored six points each.

Katie and Emma Dempsey scored 12 points each for Belgreen. Jasmine Martin drained three three-pointers, scoring nine points – all of which came in the Bulldogs’ big fourth quarter. Cami Terrell scored four points. Gabriel Moore finished with three points.

Tharptown 46, Cherokee 42

Tharptown’s Brooke Daily sank two free throws to seal a 46-42 win over the Cherokee Indians last week.

Tharptown led Cherokee 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. Cherokee came back to outscore the Wildcats 13-7 in the second quarter to give the Indians a 19-15 lead. Tharptown picked up the scoring pace in the third quarter outscoring Cherokee 19-15 to tie the game at 34-34. The Wildcats outpaced the Indians 12-8 in the fourth quarter to get the big area win.

Jessica Wilson led Tharptown with 12 points. Klaudia Harris followed with nine points, Brooke Daily scored eight points, Linda Bahena had seven points and Seirra Robinson and Aly Vandiver had four points each.

Phil Campbell 65, Hamilton 45

Darby Elliott scored 25 points to help the Phil Campbell Bobcats defeat the Hamilton Aggies 65-45 last week.

The Bobcats outpaced the Aggies in each quarter of the game. Phil Campbell led Hamilton 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-22 at the half. The Bobcats outscored the Aggies 22-14 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 52-36 heading into the final period of play. Phil Campbell outscored Hamilton 13-9 in the fourth quarter.

Dakota Elliott, with 11 points, was the second leading scorer in the game. Abby Davis and Bethany Harris had eight points each, Chloe Roberson scored seven points and Carley Nix had three points. Maddi Riddle, Anna Benford, and Anna Gunderman had one point each for the Bobcats.

Red Bay 27, Central 15

The Red Bay Tigers won a low-scoring affair over Central-Florence last week 27-15.

Red Bay led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 11-6 at halftime. Red Bay continued to lead 15-10 at the end of the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth quarter 12-5.

Allie Kennedy led Red Bay with 11 points. Darby Madden (7), Carlie Lindley (4), Carlee Humphres (3) and Morgan Pierce (2) also scored for Red Bay.

Hackleburg 54, Belgreen 51

The Belgreen Bulldogs dropped a close one at home last week to the Hackleburg Panthers 54-51. Hackleburg jumped out to a 16-11 first quarter lead, and the Bulldogs could never seem to catch them. Belgreen outscored Hackleburg in the second quarter 11-9 to close the gap to 25-22, but Hackleburg gained a point back in the third quarter, outscoring Belgreen 11-10 to push their lead to 36-32. Belgreen tried to make a push at the end, outscoring Hackleburg 19-18 in the fourth quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Katie Dempsey led Belgreen with 15 points. She was followed by Jasmine Martin with ten points. Emma Dempsey and Gabbie Moore had eight points each. Cami Terrell (5), Kaycee Wilson (3) and Emma Willingham (2) also scored for Belgreen.

Haleyville 53, Phil Campbell 51

A 27-point performance by sophomore Abby Davis was not enough to get the Phil Campbell Bobcats a win over the Haleyville Lions last week.

Phil Campbell jumped out to 13-8 lead in the first quarter. Haleyville roared back in the second quarter, outscoring Phil Campbell 19-10 to take 27-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Phil Campbell came back in the third quarter, outscoring Haleyville 16-10 to retake the lead 39-37 going into the fourth quarter. The Lions gained the advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 16-12 to get the win.

Chloe Roberson and Carley Nix had nine points each, Darby Elliott had three points, Bethany Harris finished with two points, and Dakota Elliott had one point.

Hackleburg 57, Tharptown 48

Freshman Brooke Daily scored 15 points for the Tharptown Wildcats Friday night in an area battle with the Hackleburg Panthers, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Wildcats to get the win. Tharptown lost the area contest 57-48.

Tharptown led Hackleburg 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers doubled up the Wildcats 14-7 in the second quarter to take a 28-23 halftime lead. Both teams played even in the third quarter, scoring ten points each to make the score 38-33. Hackleburg was able to widen the lead by outscoring Tharptown 19-15 in the fourth quarter.

Jessica Wilson and Klaudia Harris followed Daily in the scoring column with eight points each. Linda Bahena added five points. Sierra Robinson and Ameliah Dawson added four points each.

Belmont (Miss.) 40, Red Bay 37

Red Bay held a 26-18 advantage at halftime over their state line rival Belmont, Miss., but could not hang on, falling 40-37.

Red Bay held a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and had extended the lead to 26-18 by halftime. Belmont stormed back in the third quarter to tie the game 31-31. Belmont edged the Tigers in the fourth quarter to get the victory.

Allie Kennedy and Darby Madden led Red Bay with 15 points and 14 points respectively. Reagan Kuykendall (4), Morgan Pierce (2) and Carlie Lindley (2) also.

Vina 44, Hubbertville 20

Tuesday night, Vina travel to Hubbertville. The Lady Red Devils controlled the game from the very beginning, outscoring the Lady Lions 16-2 in the first quarter. Junior Abby Hester hit two threes and had four of her nine steals in the first quarter. Hester finish with eight points and also had ten assists. Sophomore Emma Humphres had four points in the second quarter and along with senior Mary Morgan Clingan dominated the boards to stretch Vina’s lead to 26-4 at halftime. Humphres finished with nine points and ten rebounds; Clingan finish with eight rebounds with an outstanding defensive performance.

The game saw third quarter domination by Vina’s freshman Sarah Johnson getting four points of her total six. Freshman Kaitlyn King also chipped in a 3-pointer and finished with nine points. In the fourth quarter, eighth grader Gracie Raper chipped in four points of her total six points. Seventh graders Sarah Scott and Hailey Cantrell chipped in three and two points respectively for Vina’s final tally.
