Parks, Rec announces fishing rodeo, Movie in the Park

Last year was the first for Russellville’s Fourth of July weekend fishing rodeo – but not the last.

The fishing rodeo for children has returned and this year will be held July 2 at Sloss Lake. All ages are invited to participate in this free event; parents must be present with their children for the duration.

Parents can sign their children up in advance for the rodeo at the recreation center or can sign up day of at Sloss Lake. The rodeo will begin at 5 p.m., and day-of registration will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Carrie Dover of Parks and Red said if children “have their own rod and reel, they are more than welcome to bring it,” but donated rods and reels will also be available.

A winner will be named in each age group, and each winner will be awarded a free recreational sports registration for the youth sport of their choice.

“It’s really fun. We had tons of people who came last year,” Dover said.

The fishing rodeo isn’t the only Parks and Recreation event that will precede the Fourth of July’s Jam on Sloss Lake. July 3 is the date set for Movie in the Park.

“Zootopia” will show at Lee Complex about 8 p.m. Prior to showtime, families are invited out to the Lee Complex starting about 6 p.m. for inflatable fun.

A concession stand will provide candy and popcorn for $1 and drinks for $2. Families should bring lawn chairs and blankets for a cozy community movie night.
