Vina gets two wins in Mississippi

The Vina Lady Red Devils defeated Thrasher (Mississippi) last week 10-4.

Thrasher took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Emily Renfrow walked, stole a base and scored to tie the game in the top of the second for Vina. In the top of the third Maddie Raper hit a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Vina’s lead-off hitter, Abby Hester, walked and stole second base. Both players scored on a two RBI single by Erica Cantrell.

Kaitlyn King walked in the top of the fourth, and Kim Stevens singled her into score. Pinch-runner Kayla Thompson also scored to increase Vina’s lead to 5-1.

In the top of the sixth, Renfrow walked again and stole second and third base before scoring on a RBI sacrifice by King. Thrasher scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut Vina’s lead to 6-4.

Hester led off the top of the seventh with a walk and stole two bases before Gracie Raper knocked her in. Cantrell walked, and Renfrow was hit by a pitch. King had a two RBI single, followed by an RBI sacrifice by Stevens as Vina increased the lead to 10- 4. Cantrell held on for her ninth win of the season, striking out nine batters and only walking one.

On Tuesday at Tremont (Mississippi), Hester walked, stole two bases and scored to start the game.  Tremont tied the game in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second inning, sophomore Brooke Brown, junior Ashleigh Thompson, eighth grader Maddie Raper and her sister seventh grader Gracie Raper all singled and scored. In the fourth inning, Gracie and Hester scored again on a two RBI double by King. Vina led 8-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Tremont picked up two runs to tighten the score to 8-3.

In the top of the fifth inning, senior Kim Stevens, Maddie and Gracie Raper all singled again and scored for a 11-3 lead for the Lady Red Devils. Tremont added a run in the fifth and four in the bottom of the seventh as Vina would hold on for its tenth victory by a score of 11-8. Cantrell picked up her tenth victory of the season striking out six and only giving up two earned runs.
