BTCPA announces auditions

The Bay Tree Council for the Performing Arts in Red Bay announced auditions for its final production of the 2015-16 season, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” by Joseph Kesselring.

Auditions are set for March 6 at 2 p.m. and March 7 at 7 p.m. at Community Spirit Bank’s Weatherford Centre in Red Bay. The cast includes 11 male and three female parts. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the play book.

Performance dates will be April 28 through May 1 at the Weatherford Centre in Red Bay. For additional information, contact Mark Richardson, director, at 256-356-3099 or Scotty Kennedy at 256-356-8758.

For group sales contact Beth Hammock at 256-356-9286. Tickets for the play will go on sale March 18 at the Weatherford Centre.

The play is a farcical black comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the “Mayflower” but now composed of insane homicidal maniacs. The hero, Mortimer Brewster, is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, N.Y., as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves. His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine and “just a pinch” of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the aunts’ victims – he thinks they died of Yellow Fever); and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic accomplice, Dr. Einstein, to conceal his identity and now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff.
