Wildcats claim B-Varsity county championship

Finals – Tharptown 45, Phil Campbell 31

The Tharptown Wildcats used a strong first half to defeat the Phil Campbell Bobcats and win the 2016 B-Varsity Boys Franklin County championship game.

Tharptown jumped out to a 13-6 lead over Phil Campbell in the first quarter and extended that lead to 32-15 by halftime. The Bobcats narrowly closed the gap to 38-25 by the end of the third quarter, but the Wildcats held on for the win.

Cole Daniel and Levi McCormack led Tharptown with 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Other scorers for the Wildcats were T.J. McDonald (9), Aaron Creasy (7), and Matt Hall (6).

Daniel Uptain led Phil Campbell with 12 points. Others scoring for the Bobcats were Brody Nix (7), Daniel Smith (6), Ben Williams (2), Cody Cothrum (2), and Skylar King (2).

Semifinals – Phil Campbell 44, Belgreen 39

The Phil Campbell Bobcats held off the Belgreen Bulldogs to advance to the finals of the B-Varsity Boys division of the Franklin County Tournament.

Phil Campbell jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first quarter. Both teams picked up the scoring in the second quarter, with Belgreen outscoring Phil Campbell 15-14 to cut the Bobcats lead to 24-19 at the half. Belgreen closed the gap to one point in the third quarter 28-27. Phil Campbell outscored Belgreen 16-12 in the fourth quarter to hang on for the win.

Coby Cothrum led Phil Campbell with ten points. He was followed by Brody Nix (8), Daniel Uptain (7), Skylar King (6), Isaac Cummings (4), Daniel Smith (2), and Tanner Sumerel (2).

Kostner Bryant led Belgreen with 12 points. He was followed by Jacob Taylor (9), Mason Donohoe (9), Patrick Sykes (4), Gaven Taylor (3), and Ashlee Britton (2).

Semifinals – Tharptown 37, Red Bay 34

The Tharptown Wildcats had to mount a comeback over the Red Bay Tigers to advance to the finals of the B-Varsity division of the Franklin County Tournament.

Red Bay jumped out to an 11-6 first quarter lead over Tharptown. Tharptown cut into Red Bay’s lead in the second quarter, but the Tigers still held the lead 14-13 at halftime. The Wildcats got their offense rolling in the second half, outscoring Red Bay 14-9 in the third quarter to take a 27-25 lead. The game went down to the wire with several lead changes down the stretch, but the Wildcats held onto their slim lead and notched the win.

Cole Daniel led Tharptown with ten points. Others scoring for the Wildcats were T.J. McDonald (9), Alex Argueta (6), Aaron Creasy (5), Matt Hall (3), Misael Saldana (2), and Levi McCormack (2).

Red Bay’s Tanner Nicholas led all scorers with 19 points. He was followed by Colton Corum (6), Peyton Green (2), Elijah Ingle (2), and Gath Weatherford (2).

Quarterfinals – Red Bay 48, Vina 16

The Red Bay Tigers jumped out to a 25-4 halftime lead over the Vina Red Devils and coasted to a 48-16 win in the quarterfinals of the Franklin County Tournament.

Gath Weatherford led Red Bay with 12 points. Others scoring for the Tigers were Noah Brewer (8), Zac Humphries (7), Peyton Green (6), Luke Rooker (4), Colton Corum (4), Elijah Ingle (4), and Hunter Bays (3).

 

Austin Harper led Vina with 11 points. He was followed by Jacob Lewis with four points and Chance Kennedy with one point.
