Founders Day to include popular contests

Contests are always a highly-anticipated part of Franklin County’s local festivals, and this year’s competitions at Founders Day in Red Bay Sept. 19 will pit photographers, quilters and fried pie makers against one another in a friendly battle for the best in the county.

Founders Day Fried Pie Contest

Anyone can enter! Entries must consist of four pies and be displayed on paper plate and covered in plastic wrap. Entries must include name, address and telephone number on bottom of plate.

Fried pie experts should bring their pies to the gazebo at Bay Tree Park from 9:30-10 a.m.

Judging will begin at 10:45 a.m. Winners will be announced during the festival, and winners’ photos will be featured in the “Franklin County Times,” “Franklin Free Press” and “Red Bay News.”

Three categories will be judged:

– Best tasting: first place, $100; second place, $60; third place, $40

– Most Unusual: first place, $50; second place, $30; third place, $20

– Best in show will receive a plaque

Founders Day Photography Contest

The City of Red Bay and the Franklin County Extension System will host the 5th Annual Founders Day Photography Contest at Red Bay City Hall at 9:30 a.m. Winners will be announced during the festival, and winners’ photos will be featured in the “Franklin County Times,” “Franklin Free Press” and “Red Bay News.”

This year’s theme is grilling, which can include photos of grilling, barbecuing or tailgating. Photos will be judged in two categories – youth (18 and younger) and adult (19 and older).

A number of rules apply:

– Entrants may enter up to two categories.

– Photos must be in color.

– Prints must be a minimum of 5×7 inches but no larger than 18×18 inches.

– People may use film or digital camera.

– Photos should be mounted flat on plain white or black poster board or foam board. Mounted size may be no larger than 20×20 inches.

– Mounted photos should include the following on the back: Name, address, phone numbers (work, home or cell) and photography category (adult or youth).

– Do not include titles or other information on the front of mounted board.

– Entries will be received at the Red Bay City Hall Sept. 15 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

– Photos must have been taken by contestant submitting the entry.

– Photos in each category will be judged for first, second and third places.

– Winners in each category will be awarded a cash prize and ribbon as follows: first place, $20; second place, $15; and third place, $10.

– Best in show will receive a plaque.

Photos will be displayed during the Founders Day Festival at Red Bay City Hall. Entrants may pick up their photos at Red Bay City Hall Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Founders Day Festival 2015 Quilt Show

Entries into the quilt show will be accepted at Red Bay City Hall Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Quilters must fill out an entry form indicating name and contact information as well as quilt information, including name, construction technique, quilting technique and size.
