The health science classes at Red Bay High School are always some of the most active and anticipated classes on campus. Teacher Dr. Kay Hargett always has activities and lessons planned that are informative and hands-on. The 2015-2016 school year is already off to an exciting start.

The first order of business for health science students is to learn about various aspects of safety related to the different areas of health care practices. The students have learned about different ways to contact viruses as well as bacteria. The students have learned that hand washing is the No. 1 way to prevent spread of infections.

Besides learning the necessary safety basics, students in the health science classes have been learning how to properly restrain a patient, which can be a safety issue as well. The students recently learned how to properly restrain a patient and that in order to restrain a patient, a physician must order the patient to be restrained.

“Students enjoy being involved in hands-on activities while learning different aspects of health care,” said Hargett.

Hargett said students have come back this year once again with a positive attitude, ready to learn.

“This year, students in health science will be participating in medical terminology, pharmacy technician program, foundations of health science, and human body function and structure classes,” Hargett said.

The students enrolled in health science classes are students seeking a career in a healthcare field, such as physician, nurse, respiratory therapy, physical therapy and laboratory technician, to name a few.
