A Russellville woman was arrested July 30 after her newborn tested positive for illegal drugs. The woman, 23-year-old Brittany King, was arrested and charged with chemical endangerment of a child.

King and the newborn both tested positive for illegal drugs after the child was born at Helen Keller Hospital. Russellville PD obtained medical records and other information from Helen Keller Hospital through DHR, according to investigator handling the case Sgt. Jake Tompkins.

The specific illegal drugs found in the toxicology report are known, but investigators are not sharing that information at this time. The newborn was reported to be in good condition.

Prior to this arrest, King was serving a 60-month suspended sentence for unrelated charges in Colbert County. King was arrested, and her bond was set at $5,000.

Chemical endangerment of a child is a Class C felony in Alabama, and if convicted, King could serve one to ten years in prison.
