Every year all across the state there are hundreds of basketball teams that set out with one goal: to win the state championship.

Alabama’s high school athletic association started a seventh size classification for the 2014-2015 seasons in order to help even things out between schools with different enrollments. But after capping off a 25-9 season, it looked as though the Red Bay Lady Tigers could have competed with any team, at any time, at any location.

Head Coach Donnie Roberts continued his winning ways last Friday as his team returned to the state title game in Birmingham, Ala. only this time they didn’t come up short.

Last year’s defeat to Woodland in the title game has been something that stuck with the team, according to just about every player. That determination paid off during the early evening of Feb. 27 as the Lady Tigers held on during a defensive battle with Geneva County.

Four of the five starters will be returning next season including the sophomore duo of Allie Kennedy and Darby Madden as well as the title game MVP, Morgan Pierce, and the defensive and rebounding force, Hope Cook. That doesn’t mean the Lady Tigers will be returning to the BJCC a year from now, but for Roberts, his staff, the families and the town of Red Bay, it looks like pretty good odds.
