Red Bay coaching candidate withdraws minutes before hiring

The Franklin County Board of Education was set to hire a new head football coach for Red Bay High School on Thursday, but just ten minutes before the board met, the candidate called and withdrew his name from consideration.
Board officials did not identify who the candidate was but insisted that they had several strong applicants still left to choose from.
Board member Ralph Winchester said the school needed to have a coach in place before the school board meets again next month since spring practice will begin soon.
For this reason, the board voted unanimously to allow Superintendent Gary Williams to move forward with hiring the most qualified applicant from the list of eligible candidates to fill the position.
Former coach Dale Jeffreys resigned in December to become the head coach at Colbert County.
