Mother, son injured in house fire
HODGES – A mother and son are in critical condition in Birmingham after their mobile home caught fire early Thursday morning.
Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said Leah D. Colburn, 37, and Caydn Colburn, 6, both of 214 Holly Springs Church Rd. in Hodges, suffered from smoke inhalation and sustained severe thermal burns to 70 percent of their bodies as a result of the blaze.
Oliver said firefighters with both the Vina and Hodges volunteer fire departments were dispatched to the single-wide mobile home about 1 a.m.
Both Leah and Caydn Colburn were transported by ambulance to Red Bay Hospital where they were then transferred to UAB Hospital and Children’s Hospital.
Leah Colburn’s husband, Charles Colburn, was able to escape from the fire after trying unsuccessfully to put it out.
The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined at this time.
Officials with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire further, however no foul play is suspected.
