Former Golden Tiger star, UA running back Calloway arrested

The Tuscaloosa News reported Friday that former Russellville football star and current University of Alabama freshman running back Brent Calloway was arrested early Friday morning and charged with possession of marijuana.

Calloway, who was one of the state’s top recruits in 2011, was released on a $1,000 bond.

Reports indicate that Calloway was spotted driving near Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa about 12:30 a.m. Friday with no headlights on.

According to Tuscaloosa Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Blankley, officers noticed a strong marijuana smell when they pulled Calloway over. Officers found a small bag containing marijuana in his pocket, the News reported.

He was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and later released from the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

Calloway has not played in 2011 and was expected to red-shirt this season, meaning that he would have four full years of eligibility remaining after this season.

Calloway committed to Alabama before his junior season in 2009 and was one of the state’s most sought after players.

He surprised many at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American game in January when he announced that he would be attending Auburn, rather than playing for the Crimson Tide.

About three weeks later, Calloway signed with Alabama.

In April, he made headlines across the state again when an Auburn fan site accused Calloway of receiving benefits to attend Alabama. Those allegations, however, were quickly dismissed by Alabama.

He was expected to compete for playing time this season but his enrollment was delayed throughout the summer because of issues with his eligibility.
