Spruce Pine Pageant planned for weekend

Organizers of Spruce Pine Day are excited about the Second Annual Spruce Pine Day Pageant that will be held this Saturday in front of the Spruce Pine Museum.

The pageant will begin at 2 p.m. and will include categories for girls from newborn to 12 months, 12 to 23 months, two to three years, four to five years, six to seven years, eight to nine years, 10 to 14 years and 15 to 19 years. There will also be a category for boys from newborn to age five.

Hosting this year’s pageant will be Brooke Swinney, Phil Campbell’s Dream Girl.

Spruce Pine Day organizer Jo Ann Gandy said the pageant will serve as a fundraiser that community residents hope will be completed soon.

“The outside of the museum has been completely redone,” Gandy said. “On the inside, we’ve gotten the flooring finished and we’ve installed some of the original shelving units.

“We want to have it set up just like it would have been in the early 1900s. We want this to be a source of pride for our community and a place where people can come to see Spruce Pine’s history.”

Gandy said she hopes many people will turn out for the pageant this weekend and for Spruce Pine Day on Oct. 15.

“We think these will be great events for the community,” she said.
