Red Bay to begin neighborhood watch

RED BAY – At Monday’s meeting of the Red Bay City Council, Police Chief Janna Jackson told council members the police department is planning to start a neighborhood watch program.

“The purpose of this program is to get citizens to work together with our law enforcement to ensure safety in our neighborhoods,” Jackson said.

The first meeting of the Red Bay Neighborhood Watch will be July 25 at 6 p.m. at the Red Bay Police Department. Jackson urged all residents to attend. Those who are interested in the program can also contact the RBPD at 256-356-4455.

In other business the council addressed the following issues:

• Approved the police reserve officer policy.

• Introduced and approved the resolution honoring Red Bay native Sgt. Christopher Roger Bell who was killed on active duty in Afghanistan.

• Agreed to start the process to replace the city street department’s backhoe and leaf machine, which are several years old.

• Approved education requests to begin renovations to the sound, lighting and seating to the Red Bay High School Auditorium.

Mayor Bobby Forsythe also said residents or businesses who might be interested in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s safe room program of a 75 percent to 25 percent match of funds could pick up information books at the city hall. Applications will also be available starting Thursday. The cutoff date for applications is Sept. 1.
