Entertainer visits PCES
Students at Phil Campbell Elementary School gathered on Thursday morning to hear renowned author and storyteller Eddie Bowman, who is better known by his performance name of “Chester Drawers.”
Bowman, who is touted as an author, songwriter, comedian, entertainer, and inspirational speaker, played the part of Chester Drawers for eight years in the city of Branson, Mo., and he now tours elementary schools across the country as Chester Drawers.
While at PCES, “Chester Drawers” told stories, sang songs with his guitar and tried to communicate various messages like how fun reading can be or why students shouldn’t do drugs.
“When we were contacted about having Chester Drawers come to our school to put on his performance, I thought it would be a great idea,” PCES librarian Alana Swinney said. “I thought it would be good for them to be introduced to a real author who could communicate with them on their level.”
Bowman brought many props, which he used to entertain the students and teachers. He also brought his guitar and had all the students sing along to his funny songs.
“He is able to show children through his performance that reading can be fun and exciting and that’s what we want our students here to learn,” Swinney said. “He was funny and entertaining, but at the same time, he had a good message.”
After telling a few stories and singing songs about crazy cats, barking dogs and Alabama hillbillies, Bowman concluded his show with some advice for all the students at PCES.
“Keep singing, keep reading and stay away from traps,” he said.
Bowman stuck around after the performance to sign autographs for the children who were excited to meet someone famous.
“It’s important for kids to see that learning can be enjoyable,” Swinney said. “The kids really seemed to enjoy the performance and hopefully they’ll continue to remember how much fun reading and learning can be.”
