Vina boys, girls fall

The Vina boys held a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Phillips rallied and held on for a 61-58 victory in the Class 1A, Area 13 Tournament.

The Red Devils put together several runs and led for most of the game. Phillips trailed 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and used a 13-5 run to take the lead before Vina closed out the second quarter with a 9-0 run.

Vina led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but Phillips rallied to trail by five heading into the final quarter.

The Bears assumed the lead for good on a pair of free throws with 1:19 remaining and led by as many as four points in the closing minute.

Vina pulled within two points on two separate occasions, but the Bears secured the win with a free throw with 2.9 seconds to play. Vina’s 3-point attempt fell short.

Adam Pharr led the Red Devils with 20 points while Patrick White scored 13 points and Nicky Miller added 12 points. Also scoring for Vina were Brandon McKee (8), Ethan Pharr (4) and Nick Schmittou (1).

With the win Phillips advances to the semifinals to play Belgreen. That game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Belgreen.

The Lady Red Devils trailed by 19 points in the second half before putting together a furious rally, but time ran out for Vina as Phillips held on for the victory.

Vina trailed by six at halftime, but the She Bears ended the third quarter on a 12-0 run to take control of the game.

Morgan Humphres led the Lady Red Devils with 11 points while Jessica Pickle and Fallyn Shotts added 10 points each. Also scoring for Vina were Shelby Boyd (5), Andria Parrish (5), Miranda Howard (4), Claudia Townsend (3) and Amanda Patterson (3).

With the win Phillips advances to the semifinals to play Belgreen. That game will be played at 5: 30 p.m. Thursday at Belgreen.
