State Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Glen Zorn visited Franklin County Thursday during his campaign tour across the state.

Zorn, who has served as the assistant agriculture commissioner for two terms under gubernatorial candidate Ron Sparks, is the Democratic nominee for agriculture commissioner. He faces Republican John McMillan in the November general election.

Zorn, a former two-term mayor of his native Florala, said traveling to Franklin County was a little like returning home. His late wife, Mary Jane Jeffcoat Zorn, had family from Franklin County and they often spent time here visiting them.

“Franklin County is a special place for us,” he said.

Zorn took a leave from his family’s farming business in 2000 to work for Sparks in the commissioner’s office. During that time, he said, the office has developed a strong relationship with businesses in countries around the world.

“Agriculture is the largest industry in the state of Alabama and I think I am the most qualified person to hold this office and continue making the progress that we’ve been making,” he said.

Zorn said he wants to continue working to develop alternative fuel sources and to make sure that Alabama residents are getting the products they are paying for.

“This office makes sure that the food we buy and the gas we put in our vehicles is what we are supposed to be getting,” he said.

“I will do my best to look out for the people of Alabama and make sure they are protected.”
