Russellville native Justin Wyatt couldn’t believe the devastation as he walked the grounds at his fiancé’s parent’s home in Weir, Miss., one day after an estimated ten-mile wide tornado ripped across the region.

The tornado was part of the storm system that continued to destroy homes all the way to Albertville in northeast Alabama.

Wyatt said he and his fiancé, Emily, were on their way to watch a NASCAR race in Talladega when they received a phone call from Emily’s family saying a tornado had leveled their home.

Wyatt said his fiancé’s parents, sister, brother and their children were all inside the home when the tornado hit.

“They were all able to fit in an interior bathroom when the tornado hit,” he said. “The tornado tore apart every room around them, leaving the bathroom intact. Thankfully they are all safe.”

Wyatt said they had planned to exchange vows later this year at his future in-laws’ home.

“My fiancé, Emily, and I planned to get married in her parents backyard this coming June,” he said. “I can’t even put into words how I felt when I saw her parents home completely destroyed. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Wyatt and his fiancé continue to help family members pick up the pieces and keep moving forward.

“After a full day of moving debris, I asked Emily’s father how he was doing and he told me he is just exhausted,” he said.

Wyatt said people have came out “in droves” to help each other get back to the life they were living before the storm came and took the normalcy of small town living away.

Wyatt and his fiancé have decided to go ahead and get married this Saturday, getting the stress of that event out of the way to help loved ones recover all that was lost.
