Field trip promotes arts

Russellville Middle School drama and show choir students hopped on a bus and took a trip to see a famous Broadway musical at Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham Wednesday.
The musical production of “Ragtime” was directed by Roy Hudson, theatre director of Shades Valley High School and last year's Alabama state teacher of the year, and was performed by professional actors and actresses who put plays like this on as a career.
RMS drama teacher Patrice Smith believes the field trip taught the students an important lesson.
RMS principal Frankie Hammock went with the students to see the production and said it is great for students to be able to do some learning outside the classroom.
Hammock said programs such as drama and show choir gives students a different area that they may not have given any thought to.
Smith said these learning experiences wouldn’t be possible without support.
Hammock said it takes good, patient teachers to help students thrive and excel.
RMS drama will be producing some one-act productions at the end of March and Hammock believes that now is the time to show support for the arts.
