Red Bay sewer improved

RED BAY- While the City of Red Bay has been in compliance with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for the past five months, the city's sewage problems are far from being repaired.
Mayor Bobby Forsythe said the city recently received word that they have been approved for a USDA loan to bring the city's sewer system up to code.
"Our engineer has written a letter asking for an extension from ADEM, and we feel like we will get the extension," Forsythe said. "Everything is in place for work to begin this fall."
Forsythe said the city has been under a consent order for the past two years, and renovations for the system were supposed to be completed by Sept. 9. However, there is still work to be done with the system.
"There has been work done but there is still more to be done," Forsythe said. "Curtains, aerators, and control panels are a few of the items that need to be renovated. We will also have to renovate the lift stations."
The renovation project will cost the city $716,000, which will be paid over a period of time.
Forsythe said he is very optimistic about the sewer project, and feels there have been improvements in the last five months or so.
"Everything is coming together, and we are very optimistic about the sewer system," Forsythe said. "But, it is going to take time to get all of the projects completed."
