PHIL CAMPBELL- A Phil Campbell firefighter received a commendation from the town council this week for rescuing a drowning victim recently at Mon Dye recreation area.
Fire Chief Mike Rice said Sgt. Michael Mays was swimming with his family on Monday, July 27 when a swimmer became distressed in the water.
"He was trying to swim out to the island with his cousin," Mays said.
"His cousin had already made it when the swimmer began having an asthma attack in the water."
Rice said Mays immediately swam out to the swimmer and helped him to safety. The swimmer suffered no injuries.
The Phil Campbell Rescue Squad was dispatched to Mon Dye and evaluated his medical condition.
During a regular council meeting Tuesday night, the town council voted to give Mays a commendation for his actions.
"Mays upheld the proud tradition of the fire service and the Phil Campbell Volunteer Fire Department," the commendation reads.
Mays has been a member of Phil Campbell Volunteer Fire Department for three years.
"We are proud of Mays for his actions that day, and we are thankful he was there and there was a favorable outcome," Rice said.
