Tired of waiting for the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, the Russellville 11-12 All-Stars decided to put on a hitting exhibition of their own Monday during the Little League Majors District 6 Championship Series.
The team combined for five homers in its 18-0 victory against Tuscaloosa-Barnes in the opening game of the best-of-three series.
"I am pleased with the offensive performance," said Russellville coach Brian Bynon. "We've hit the ball well in practice and it carried over on the field."
Trevor Malone led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a single by Jacob Green.
Landon Oliver moved Malone to third on a fielder's choice as the defense opted to retire Green at second.
Hunter Kiel hit a three-run homer to bring the runners home.
Malone led off the third inning with a double and scored on a two-run homer by Green to push Russellville's lead to 5-0. Jacob Bynon added a solo homer two batters later.
Russellville added four more runs in the inning.
Micah Fleming added a two-run homer in the fourth before Kiel hit his second three-run homer of the game moments later.
Kiel led Russellville with two homers, a single and six RBIs while Green and Bynon each homered, singled and drove in three runs.
Micah Fleming homered, drew a walk and drove in two runs while Malone and Nick Hicks doubled, singled and drove in one run each.
Austin Bohannon singled and scored a run. Oliver reached on a fielder's choice and drew a walk.
Jacob Wallace reached on an error and Zack Garrison drew a walk and reached first after a pitch hit him. He scored both times he reached base.
Oliver pitched 21/3 innings for the win, allowing only one hit and striking out five. Bynon pitched 12/3 innings of relief and struck out three.
