RED BAY – A resident of Red Bay asked to bring wrestling back to the city in an effort to give the city's youth an outlet for entertainment.
James Malone with United States Wrestling Federation addressed the council Monday in an effort to bring wrestling entertainment back to Red Bay.
"There's not a building large enough to hold the ring except Red Bay School and they turned us down," Malone said.
Malone asked if they could use city property for the events. Prospective sites included the city park or the senior center parking lot.
"I can bring names to Red Bay," Malone said. "And give the young people here something to do."
The council didn't say yes, but they didn't rule out the item either. The issue was tabled until all the information can be collected including liability issues for the city.
The council passed a resolution to participate in the 'Spend $20 on the 20th' campaign.
The council also declared June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Red Bay per the request of the Department of Human Resources.
The council accepted the recommendations from the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation regarding loss control. The policy will be added to the employee handbooks.
The council voted to open a checking account for the $50,000 grant secured to the city through the legislature. The city will be taking bids from banking institutions.
The council acknowledged Police Officer Justin Perry's completion of his 90-day probationary period. Perry is now eligible for insurance and other benefits offered to city employees. Perry is in the midst of completing the police academy and is doing very well.
The council went into executive session to discuss the good name and character of Lt. Eddie Chandler. When the council came back into regular session, no action was taken. However, a promotion for Chandler was discussed, but no action was taken due to the absence of Police Chief Pat Creel.
"I know that you [Chandler] have done a great job in Red Bay, and we hope to have you for many more years to come," Mayor Bobby Forsythe said.
Chandler said he intended to stay at Red Bay until he retired, and he indicated he'd still like to if it were possible.
Forsythe announced that all city services would be closed on July 3 in observance of the July 4th holiday.
The next regular meeting will be held on Monday, July 6 at 7 p.m. at city hall.
