Yard sale gives kids a chance to earn and learnMelissa Cason

It's summer, and kids-and their parents-are looking for different ways to have fun. There's a way to have fun, learn and make a little cash this summer with Kid's Cash Toy and Clothing Yard Sale.
Organizer Missy Richey said the idea came from the kindergarten class last year.
"I'd give out play money and the kids could buy different things with it from the store supported by parents," Richey said. "But, this year, money was a little tight so I had the kids bring old toys and stuff to buy with the money. So each student had their old little 'yard sale' at their desk and they loved it."
Richey said the yard sale will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Russellville Recreation Center.
"The sale will be run by kids," Richey said. "We will have a snack area for the parents to sit while their kids shop or sell during the yard sale."
Richey said a representative from CB&S Bank will be there at 8:30 a.m. to give a little workshop on money, finances and saving.
"They are going to have little goody bags for the kids too," Richey said. "It's going to be fun and educational for the children."
Richey said the sale is open to children ages five to 12, and the Junior Leadership students will be available to help the children who haven't learned to make change.
The cost to participate is $10 and 10 percent of sales from each booth to cover the center's rental and advertising cost. Those who wish to participate need to sign up by calling the recreation center at 332-8870.
"Once they are registered they will need to drop by the rec center before June 27 to pick up their packet and goody bag for the registration," Richey said.
