Caution urged on Jackson Avenue

The downtown revitalization has begun with the removal of the traffic lights downtown.
As part of the first steps to give the intersections a makeover, the traffic lights along Jackson were taken down Tuesday morning.
Police Chief Chris Hargett warns motorists to continue to use caution when traveling along Jackson Avenue.
"Jackson now has three four-way stops," Hargett said. "The four-way stops are located at Madison, Lawrence, and Cotaco streets."
The other intersections along Jackson are simply stops signs for the motorist traveling up the side streets.
"Jackson has the right of way at these places," Hargett said.
Hargett said there should be stop signs up at these four way stops, but motorist should still use caution.
Hargett said the intersection at Coffee Ave. and Lawrence Street will also be a four-way stop.
The four-way stops at Lawrence, Madison and Cotaco will be replaced with new decorative traffic signals once the new construction is complete. The plan will also narrow the intersections in an effort to calm traffic through the downtown area.
The second phase of the downtown revitalization will consist of new sidewalks and landscaping for the downtown area.
The projects are being funded through grants secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
