HUNTSVILLE – Missing two starters who were competing at the state track meet, the Belgreen softball team opened the Region Tournament Friday with two players becoming injured, one of which was taken to the hospital.
The thin lineup fought hard, but in the end lost to Lynn 4-1 to fall to the losers' bracket.
Brittany Greenhill left the game when a pitch hit her elbow and was sent to the hospital for x-rays. Erica Smith's hand was injured when she attempted to check a swing and the pitch struck her hand.
Smith later returned to the game.
"(With the track meet and injuries) I didn't have room to make substitutions and adjust like I needed to," said Belgreen coach Frank Billingham.
The Lady Bulldogs held Lynn scoreless until the third when the Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead.
Belgreen tied the game in the fourth when Loren McVicker drew a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Bridgett Thompson.
McVicker then moved to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Lynn answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs and added an additional run in the sixth inning.
Amber Smith drew a pair of walks and stole a base for the Lady Bulldogs while McVicker also reached base on a walk.
The only other Belgreen batters to reach base were Thompson on the fielder's choice and Greenhill, who reached after the pitch hit her elbow.
With the loss, Belgreen fell to the losers' bracket and played Decatur Heritage Friday night. That game was completed too late to be included in today's edition of The Franklin County Times.
If Belgreen won that game they will continue playing in the tournament today.
The tournament is being played at the Huntsville Sportsplex.
