Dealing with life's little disappointments

By Staff
Melissa Cason
Let's face it. Sometimes life can be down right disappointing. We build ourselves up for different things, and we are inevitably let down.
But, it's what we do in the face of adversity that defines who we are. I have had many personal and professional disappointments in my life. And, I'm sure I've been a disappointment to my parents, too.
I'll be honest. I've gotten upset and discouraged by those disappointments. I've even let disappointments at work affect the way I feel when I'm at home, and vice versa with personal disappointments.
I guess it's important for us to experience disappointments so we'll know how to appreciate the good things when they happen.
If we got everything we wanted exactly when we wanted it, we would have no appreciation for it when we got it, which means we'd all be spoiled.
Jimmy experienced a professional disappointment this week.
He was upset. I was worried he'd take that disappointment and sit on it because he didn't get what he wanted when he wanted it.
I'm almost ashamed to admit I had that thought, but I am glad I was wrong. The next day he called me with great news. He had found another way to his goal even though he'd had a let down. I was very proud of him for finding another way to get what he wanted.
I guess that's really what life is all about. Isn't it?
We try to teach our children that when life deals you lemons you make lemonade.
I know that sounds a little silly, but we want our boys to know that everything is not always rosy.
There will be little disappointments at work, and big disappointments at home.
I like to think the personal disappointments are more devastating than the professional ones since my family means more to me than my career.
I want to encourage everyone, young or old, to not get discouraged with your disappointments, and realize they are blessings even though it doesn't seem like it at the time.
