Phil Campbell acquires fire truck

PHIL CAMPBELL – The Phil Campbell Volunteer Fire Department welcomed its first new fire truck to the department in more than 30 years.
Fire Chief Mike Rice said the 2009 fire truck arrived in Phil Campbell Saturday, but won't be in service for another week or so.
"We have to do some training with it and put equipment on it before we can use it during a fire," Rice said. "That will take about a week."
Mayor Jerry Mays said the truck cost $199,995 and was paid for by a grant from Homeland Security, and the town paid $10,000 to acquire the truck.
"The town paid $5,000 and the water board paid $5,000 to match the grant, and we want to thank the water board for helping us with the matching money," Mays said.
Mays said this is the third grant from Homeland Security for new fire equipment. The fire department also received new air packs and new turnout gear.
Mays said the town is working to maintain its ISO rating of 6.9 and hopefully lower it to receive better insurance rates.
"If we can get the ISO rating lower, then homeowners can save more money on their homeowner's insurance," Mays said.
Mays said the town thanks Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) for his work in securing these grants with Homeland Security.
