Accurate Census data important for county

By Staff
Staff Editorial
The U.S. Census Bureau will conduct its next census in 2010, and Franklin County needs every resident recorded in order to receive much-needed government funding.
According to the Bureau, the census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution and is a count of everyone living in the U.S. every 10 years. Americans are required by law to participate, and federal law protects all personal information gathered by census workers.
Data collected during a census is used to distribute Congressional seats to states, make decisions about which community services should be provided and disburse $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.
To perform an accurate count, the Census Bureau needs help on the local level from citizens who will work as census takers, crew leaders, crew leader assistants and recruiting assistants.
To schedule an appointment to take the Census worker test and apply for a job, call 1-866-861-2010 or visit www.census2010.gov.
