Chief decisions important matters

The new Russellville and Red Bay city councils have taken a cautious step in re-appointing police chiefs in their respective towns.
The Russellville council voted 5-0-1 Monday night to re-appoint Chris Hargett as chief.
Though council members have repeatedly said they never had an issue with Hargett, they chose not to appoint him at their previous meeting.
The Red Bay City Council tabled discussions of the police chief appointment Monday night and will look at more applicants for that position, despite having Pat Creel, a former president of the state's police chief association.
Both governing bodies have taken cautious steps in appointing police chiefs because it is such an important role in our communities.
It is certainly no reflection of the jobs Hargett and Creel have done in the past.
