Show your appreciation for local veterans

It's easy to take for granted the service provided by our country's military veterans but there are plenty of local programs in honor of Veteran's Day, which is observed Nov. 11 each year.
We applaud the combined efforts of the Franklin County of Chamber Commerce and American Legion Post 64, which are sponsoring a parade tomorrow at 2 p.m. beginning at Big Star and concluding at the Franklin County Courthouse.
Local schools have also been showing their support by planning Veteran's Day programs. During its PTO meeting Monday night, Belgreen High School recognized 16 veterans, who were serenaded by the third and fourth grade classes.
Phil Campbell Elementary will feature guest speaker Dwight Thomas and singing by the second grade today at 2 p.m., while Phil Campbell High School will host retired Maj. Gen. Larry Gunderman Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
The service provided by our veterans can never be fully repaid but that shouldn't stop us from showing our support by attending a Veteran's Day program or parade, volunteering with a veteran's organization or simply thanking a veteran in person.
