Phil Campbell loses in final seconds

By Staff
CLEMENTS – Clements running back Brandon Sanderfer rushed for 258 yards on 23 carries for three touchdowns in a clash with the Phil Campbell Bobcats that wasn't decided until the final seconds.
Sanderfer's final six-yard run to the end zone with 24 seconds left in the game was quickly followed by a pass from quarterback Jamison Bridges to Seth Bachelor for the two-point conversion and the Colts (2-1, 1-1) walked away with a hard fought 35-28 win.
The Bobcats led 28-27 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game, but Bachelor intercepted a Jordan Benford pass on the Colts 2-yard line to prevent Phil Campbell (0-3, 0-2) from extending the lead.
The pick allowed Clements to drive 98 yards on 12 plays to earn the victory.
Clements started the scoring on a 4-yard run by Sanderfer and Phil Campbell quickly evened things up on a 7-yard run by running back Daniel Bryant.
Jonathan Franklin added another touchdown in the second for Clements on an 8-yard run and quarterback Jamison Bridges hit Jess McElyea on a 35-yard touchdown connection before Phil Campbell closed first half scoring with a three-yard pass from Benford to wide receiver Dillan Hamby.
The Bobcats struck first in the second half when Daniel Bryant scored on a 7-yard scoring run. The PAT was blocked, leaving Clements with a 21-20 lead.
Phil Campbell struck again in the fourth on a 10-yard run by Benford. Benford found Matt Waid for the two-point conversion to give Phil Campbell an eight-point lead.
Sanderfer answered for Clements with a 53-yard scoring run before the game's final seconds showdown.
The Phil Campbell offense, which struggled in the first two games of the season, rolled up 335 yards against the Colts.
Bryant led the rushing attack with 129 yards on 24 carries. Benford carried the ball 11 times for 51 yards.
Benford also had a strong night passing, completing 8-of-13 passes for 118 yards.
Hamby was the leading receiver with two catches for 34 yards while Bryant pulled in a pair of passes for 30 yards. Waid caught three passes for 22 yards.
Hamby and Adam Mitchell led the defense with nine tackles each.
Phil Campbell will travel to Lexington Friday.
