The students at West Elementary School now have the option of having fresh fruit and veggies instead of cookies, chips and cakes as a snack three times per week.
The fresh fruit is offered to them free of charge because of a USDA grant awarded to the school.
Good nutrition is essential for child development and learning. Having good, quality snacks is part of good nutrition. Providing the students with such snacks will help them learn by providing essential nutrients.
These snacks are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and can replace traditional snacks sent from home. While these snacks are helping fuel our youth's minds, they are also helping pad the pocketbook by giving parents an option not to send snacks on the days where fruits and veggies will be provided.
With everything else going up, it's refreshing to see a little mercy to the pocket book even if it's only enough for a few snacks per week.
