Sloss Dam work closer to starting

The Russellville City Council finalized a contract Monday morning that will allow them to move forward with plans to repair Sloss Dam.
The council adopted a resolution during a called meeting Monday authorizing the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Government to administer the $300,000 grant project and entered into a contract with that group.
The city also selected and entered into a contract with Goodwyn, Mills &Cawood as the engineering firm to handle the project.
The dam broke in two places early last month and has since been pumped of all its water. Kenneth Brooks, of NACOLG, said the city would be responsible for some administrative steps before they can move forward, but he anticipates that the dam project will be one that moves along quickly.
"This will be done as quickly as possible," Brooks said. "This is being handled as an emergency situation."
The city will be responsible for $69,300 of the project.
