Local church reaching out to elderly

By Staff

The Calvary Baptist Church Seniors spends an hour each month with the residents of Burns Nursing Home praising God and helping to spread His word.
Seniors Member Sue Hammock said the group sings at the nursing home every month, working to make a difference in the lives of the older citizens.
"We usually have a good turn out here," Hammock said. "About 12 to 15 members usually come to sing."
Hammock and the other members of the group enjoy coming and singing to the nursing home patients each month.
"The Bible says to make a joyful noise," Hammock said. "I'm not sure our singing is joyful but at least it's noise."
During the time they spend at the nursing home, the group sings a handful of songs selected by requests or by thumbing through the songbook and opening a page.
In addition to singing at Burns Nursing Home each month, the senior group has other projects, such as a senior citizen's luncheon held once a month at the church, and various trips and outings planned for the group.
"We do a lot of different things, like going shopping and taking trips together, but we are here at the nursing home every third Tuesday to sing with the residents," Hammock said.
The group has nicknamed themselves the Good Timers because they always have a good time together.
