Candidate qualifying opens for primaries

Franklin County voters now have a better idea as to who their candidates will be during the upcoming party primaries.
Qualifying for local elections began Saturday morning with several Democrats turning out to register.
There have been no Republicans to qualify for a countywide office yet.
Franklin County Democratic Executive Board member Wanda Myrick said she had hoped to see a bigger turnout for the opening of qualifying Saturday, but said there is still plenty of time to do so.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. on April 4 to get their paperwork filed through their party's committee.
"There have been some other people who have mentioned running," Myrick said.
Republicans also expect to see some names on their list soon.
Jerry Fancher, chairman of the Republican Executive Committee, said he hopes to have a candidate in each race.
"We have got a lot of people interested but nobody has turned their papers in," he said.
"We have a meeting on April 3, the day before the deadline, and I expect most will probably wait until closer to then."
Republicans interested in qualifying can call Jerry Fancher at 810-1209. Democratic party candidates can call Wanda Myrick at 332-3270 or Brian Hamilton at 332-1660.
Candidates to qualify for the Democratic primary so far, include:
