Local Iraq War veterans part of nation's history

By Staff
Wednesday marked the five-year anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War.
The war has become one of the longest lasting conflicts in American history, only trailing the Vietnam War and the Revolutionary War in length.
This particular war has been fought much differently than all other wars as well. It has been fought primarily through the use of National Guardsmen, including a group of brave soliders from the local 115th Signal Battalion who spent more than a year in Iraq.
Those soldiers are now back in our community serving in a variety of capacities.
They all voluntarily enlist in the guard, knowing that the day may come when they are called upon.
That 's what makes a military based on volunteers even more special.
As each of them look back on the five year anniversary of this latest war effort, each one of them should know how appreciative we are of their sacrifices and service.
