Tharptown, PC win 10-and-under titles

THARPTOWN – The Phil Campbell boys defeated Tharptown 18-10, while the Vina girls edged Tharptown 6-5 in the 10-and-under championship games of the Franklin County Youth Basketball Organization Saturday.
In the boys game, Phil Campbell jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter.
Aron Creasy drained a long jumper and Sammy Hatton hit a free throw to cut the margin to 6-4, but Phil Campbell used a 9-0 run in the second and third quarters to lead 15-6 heading into the final period.
Creasy, who finished with seven points, added two more free throws and Matt Hall had a steal and layup but Phil Campbell added three more points with a free throw from Peyton Thomas, who had seven points, and a jumper from the free throw line by Joshua Seals to secure the win.
Payton Nichols scored five points for Phil Campbell, while Seals added six.
In the girls game, Montana Howard scored in the first quarter to put Vina ahead 2-0 but Rachel Love converted a 3-point play to give Tharptown a 3-2 lead.
Neither team could score in the second or third quarters but Annabell Uupton hit two free throws to put Vina ahead 4-3 in the fourth quarter.
Sierra Robinson responded for Tharptown and hit a jumper in the lane to give Tharptown a 5-4 lead with 2:45 left.
Vina came up with the winning score with 11.9 seconds left when Howard, who had a game-high four points scored on a pass from Elizabeth Baty.
"I though we had a great season," said FCBYO coach, referee and founder Richie Hester. "I just want to thank all the players, coaches, parents and grandparents for all of their support because we wouldn't have been able to do this without them."
