Tharptown wins Wildcat Classic
MUSCLE SHOALS – The Tharptown varsity softball team went 4-0 to win the Wildcat Classic at Webster Elementary Saturday.
"Our hitting has a long way to go but we have three good pitchers – Hollie Hines, Laken Barnett and Jess Myrick," said Tharptown coach Susie Sellers.
"I was pleased with our pitching and defense, and I think our hitting will come around."
The Lady Wildcats defeated Cherokee and Shoals Christian in morning pool play and beat Cherokee and Covenant Christian in the afternoon elimination round.
In the first game, Tharptown downed Cherokee 10-0 as Jess Myrick threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Chelsea McCluskey went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run and a double, while Braeden Sellers was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.
In the second game, the Lady Wildcats blasted Shoals Christian 11-1 as Myrick earned the win with five strikeouts in three innings pitched. Hatton and Barnett each went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, while Hines was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple.
In the first elimination game, Tharptown beat Cherokee 10-0 again as Myrick struck out six over three innings. Hines went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIS, while Hatton went 2-for-3 and Barnett added two singles.
In the championship game, the Lady Wildcats eged Covenant Christian 3-2 as Myrick went seven innings and struck out eight and also hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to scoring the winning run. Sellers went 2-for-2 with two singles and scored the tying run after McCluskey hit a sacrifice bunt in the second.
"Braeden Sellers had a lot of big hits and stepped up for us," said coach Sellers. "Chelsea McCluskey did a very good job of playing smart and running the bases, and Haley Hatton gave us a good fielding."
Myrick finished the tournament with four victories and 28 strikeouts over 19 innings pitched while scattering five hits.
City flag football registration

The Russellville Parks and Recreation Department flag football league will register teams until March 31.The league is for ages 16 and up, and the fee is $150 per team with a limit of 15 players. To register, come to the Russellville Recreation Center or call Derrick Dorn at 332-8770.
Regional BASS tournament
May 22-23
DECATUR – The Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce Ingalls Harbor has been chosen for the BASS Club World Championship (BCWC) Regional Tournament, a qualifier for the World Championship.
The regional tournament is set for Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23. Last year, BASS introduced a new level of competition, the BASS Club World Championship.
Ten regional tournaments are held throughout the year with winners from each advancing to the BASS Club World Championship, which is set for Oct. 6-11. Last year, fifty-one teams consisting of six members competed in the World Championship held in Shreveport/Bossier City, La.. For more information on the BCWC tournaments, visit www.bassmaster.com.
