Second chance is still deserved

By Staff
Russellville players were given a rarity in "one and done" sports competitions yesterday – a second chance.
Wenonah High School was removed from the Northwest Regional Basketball Tournament because of an eligibility rule violation and replaced by the Golden Tigers.
While as late as Thursday morning, the boy's assumed their season was over, we hope they realize this was a second chance they earned. It wasn't handed to them.
While we can only assume the violation was an oversight on the part of Wenonah's coaches, it was an oversight that gave them an unfair competitive advantage. In essence, Wednesday night's game wasn't played on a level playing field.
Who knows how the game would have turned out had the ineligible player not been on the court.
How many teams were bumped out of playoff contention due to Wenonah's oversight? How many senior seasons ended in disappointment thanks to this?
We are glad to see a mistake rectified in hopes that our Golden Tigers can play on a level playing field with their peers in their quest for a state title.
