Employee Spotlight

By Staff
Kim West
Name: Connie Green
Hometown: Russellville
High School: Belgreen
Birthday: June 18
Position/Employer: Owner, Connie's Creations
Family: Husband Mike Green, who passed away last spring; two daughters, including one who died eight years ago; one son; two grandchildren
FCT: What do you enjoy most about being a small business owner?
CG: I'm my own boss, which sounds like I can do whatever I want but it's not that way at all. I do get to make my own decisions.
FCT: When did you open this business?
CG: This has been here six years. Before that my husband and I had the gas mart on Highway 24, and I sold cakes there. I've been making cakes for 30 years now.
FCT: What are your most popular and unique items?
CG: Our birthday cakes. The largest one I've ever had to make was a 10-tier cake for a wedding, and I've also done an Italian creme cake, which has a different type of icing and filling than other cakes. We also do catering for weddings, and we do small sandwiches and finger foods along with the cake.
FCT: What is your favorite item to bake?
CG: My favorite things to bake are the different cakes because someone will come in with a design or an idea, and it's a challenge to make them.
FCT: Do you have any plans to expand?
CG: I don't have any plans right now to expand but I need more space for the party supplies. The weekend before Mike passed away, he measured this building and showed me I could add a walk-cooler and make the building bigger. I sell the party supplies because they go along with the birthday cakes, and there aren't a lot of places to buy those items unless you go to Wal-Mart.
FCT: What do you enjoy doing in youru spare time?
CG: I enjoy spending time with my family, including my son and daughter, and she has two children. I also enjoy reading. The last book I finished was "The Diary," by Nicholas Sparks. I love reading books by him and Mitch Albom.
