Another holiday passes

By Staff
Melissa Cason
The other day we all celebrated a holiday traditionally held sacred by lovers.
St. Valentine's Day is known in our world for the red heart decorations and the heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates.
Valentine's Day, while once a day to honor St.Valentine, has become a marketing ploy for greeting card companies, florists and candy makers. It is a day to tell the ones you love that you love them. Do we actually need a day to express our warmest devotions? My answer is no.
If you love someone, you let them know by the actions you make, not the words that you say. Contrary to popular belief, love is not a feeling, it's an action.
I love my kids so I make sure they have everything they could possibly need and most of what they want. I love my husband, so I try to have an open and honest relationship with him, and he does the same for me.
While I don't really believe in the concept of Valentine's Day, my boys really got into the spirit of love this year by showering me with affection.
Every day last week, each of my boys brought me a little piece of chocolate shaped like a heart, and they asked me to be their valentine every day as well. I thought it was so cute, but I told them they don't need a special day to tell me they love me. They'd just smile and say they loved me anyway.
We did the whole valentine's party thing at school and I got valentines made by their own hands. While I don't believe in valentines, I will keep these forever in my cedar chest along with their newborn hats and baby books because one day, they won't be my little boys anymore, and these items will be the only thing left of their childhood with the exception of my memories.
It was a little exciting to see my children respond to a day other than Christmas and their birthdays. It shows me that my children are learning more and more about the world around them so I must be doing something right. That makes me feel proud.
I hope all our readers had a good Valentine's Day, and if you found yourself without a valentine this year, just remember there is always next year, and in that time, you might find someone to share the day with.
But, if you don't, you'll survive. After all, it's a day created by greeting card companies, florists and candy companies.
