Scholar-Athlete of the Week: Lauren Scott

By Staff
Kim West
THARPTOWN – Lauren Scott finds creative ways to meet new people.
The Tharptown junior participates in the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce's Junior Leadership program and also competes in school and local beauty pageants.
"I like beauty pageants because you get to meet all kinds of people, and it's a fun experience," said Scott, who won the school's Miss Wildcat pageant and Decatur's Cover Girl competition last year. "My first one with an interview was a huge pageant in Birmingham that had 92 contestants, and it was very nerve-wracking. But I've learned a lot from being in pageants, especially interviewing skills."
Scott is a straight-A student, and she plays softball and basketball for the Lady Wildcats. She serves as FBLA secretary and SADD vice president and belongs to the Optimist Club, math team and annual staff.
"Lauren is a great student in the classroom, and she does her best on the basketball court. She's a player who hustles and plays good defense," said Tharptown basketball coach Chad Green. "The thing I like the most about her is that even though she enters a lot of beauty pageants and wins a lot, she is still the same Lauren – down-to-earth, humble and a good Christian girl."
In her spare time, Scott enjoys catching up on sleep and spending time with her boyfriend.
"I love going home and sleeping late, and I like to spend time with my boyfriend, Alex McCluskey," said Scott, who will laugh at nearly anything, especially teammate and fellow junior Hollie Hines. "Hollie can always make you laugh – she is just a funny person without trying to be."
Scott said she is excited to be a member of the first senior class in school history next fall and enjoys attending a small school.
"I like going to a small school because you get a lot of one-on-one time," said Scott, who named math as her favorite subject and second-grade teacher Michelle Lane and third-grade teacher Marqueta Prince as her favorite teachers. "I'm very excited to be able to be part of history in the making, and I've gotten to be part of the first varsity softball and basketball teams here."
She is the daughter of Tim and Cynthia Scott.
