BRILLIANT – The Vina Red Devils found out that Brilliant's upset of R.A. Hubbard last week might not be a fluke as Brilliant defeated Vina 50-14 last Friday night.
Brilliant scored at least two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and took a 36-0 lead into the locker room.
Vina's Randy Barnes rushed in from two yards out midway through the third quarter. Blake Thorn added the two-point conversion to make the score 36-8.
Jared White scored the Red Devils' other touchdown when he broke free for a 15-yard score with eight minutes left to play in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion failed to make the final score 50-14.
Brilliant sacked Vina quarterback Brent Townsend four times and also forced two fumbles and one interception.
Both teams racked up double-digit penalties – Vina was flagged 10 times for 80 yards, while Brilliant had 11 for 90 yards.
Barnes led the Vina rushing attack with 88 yards on 11 caries and one touchdown, and Bryan Darracott added 80 yards on just nine carries, and
Blake Thorn enjoyed a solid all-around game with 131 all-purpose yards, including 77 yards receiving, 43 return yards and 11 on the ground.
Overall, Vina finished with 205 yards of total offense, including 111 through the air.
Nash Creekmore, who had a kickoff return for a touchdown in each of Vina's first two games, did not play after injuring his ankle and is questionable for the next game when the Red Devils (1-2, 0-2) host Phillips next Friday at 7 p.m.
