Effton E. "Gene" Mitchell, Sr.

Effton E. "Gene" Mitchell, Sr., age 82, of Golden, Miss, died Aug. 26, 2007 at his residence. He was born in Missouri April 6, 1925 to Lester and Jimmie Vera Mitchell, and a brick mason for 40 years and was recognized as an artist in his field. After retiring from masonry, he worked in maintenance for Days Inn and Shell Station for several years in Fulton, Miss. He served in World War II in European Theater with the Rainbow Artillery Division. He loved telling his experiences in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at Golden Central Baptist Church with Bro. Mickey Trammel officiating. Burial was in the Ridge Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy Edwards Mitchell; son, Effton Mitchell, Jr. and wife, Janan Mitchell; two daughters, Janet Allison and husband, Tony, and Dana Parks, and husband, Wesley; grandchildren, Brenn Mitchell, Jason Allison and wife, Shara, Justin Allison, Emily Strickland and husband, David Strickland, Alix Hester, Alaina Hester and Blake Hester, great-grandchildren, Audra Mitchell, Victoria Strickland, Harly Strickland and Cayden Mitchell; and special friends at Heart to Heart Hospice, Gary, Kristen, Janie and Valerie.
Pallbearers for the funeral included Brenn Mitchell, Jason Allison, Justin Allison, Blake Hester, David Strickland, Alvin Looney and Johnny Bowlin.
Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay assisted the family.

Judith Ann Rhoden, age 68, of Haleyville passed away Aug. 28, 2007 at Carraway Methodist Hospital. She was a member o f Old Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by parents, Elmer and Charlotte Kessell, brother, Bob Kessell, husband, George Rhoden, and granddaughter, Misty Hamilton.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Old Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Haleyville with Greg Chappell officiating. The body will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
She is survived by daughters, Charlotte Mazariegos and Sandra Key, both of Haleyville; sister, Bonnie Van Atta of Oregon; brother, Raymond "Bill" Kessell of Lynn; companion, Roy Heath of Haleyville; grandchildren, Marie Hairrell, Jonathon Rea, Candie Rea, Jeffrey Rea, Alexandra Heath, Kristy Heath, Samantha Heath, Kristy Hamilton, and Tiffany Hamilton; and great-grandchildren, Destiny Hairrell, Emily Hairrell, and Aston Heath.
Pallbearers for the service include Jeffrey Rea, Jonathon Rea, Heath Hairrell, Mike Heath, Johnny Fortenberry, Toby Davis, Donnie Whitten, and Sam Heath. In lieu of flowers, make contributions to Old Trinity Baptist Church Youth Fund, 215 Old Mayo Road, Haleyville, AL 35565. Pinkard Funeral Home of Haleyville assisted the family.

Samuel O. Sherrill, 70, of Phil Campbell, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2007.
The visitation will be held Saturday, September 1, 2007 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spry Memorial Chapel. The 1 p.m. funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Liberty Hill Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Sherrill, Sr. and Rosie Isom Sherrill; brother, Glen Sherrill and wife Shirley Sherrill, and brother, Gene Sherrill and wife, Marlene Sherrill.
He is survived by wife, Kathy Sherrill; sisters, Martha Davis and Reba Turner.
Wallace Vandiver

Wallace Vandiver, age 92, of Haleyville, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at his home. He was a member and served as Deacon at New Prospect Baptist Church.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at 2 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Haleyville with Bro. Ron Horton officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. to 2p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
He is survived by wife, Lassie Vandiver; children, Olena Terry and husband, Donald, of Trinity, Ala., and Randall Vandiver and wife, Barbara, of Town Creek, Ala.; brother, Bynam Vandiver of Georgia; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by parents, Lonnie and Ludie Vandiver, and several brothers and sisters.
Pinkard Funeral Home of Haleyville assisted the family.
