Dumb luck makes life a little tough

By Staff

The past few weeks have been difficult for me. I fell and broke my foot on June 9, and life has been a little complicated since then.
Now, there is a little bit of controversy as to why exactly I fell. I don't really know what happened. One minute I was walking out to my car, and the next I was laying on the ground in agonizing pain.
My husband, Jimmy, came running out of the house – I don't even want to imagine if I had fallen while he was off working – and picked me up off the ground. We pretty much knew my foot was broken.
The first thing that entered my mind was "How am I going to work with a broken foot?"
The answer to that question was that I wasn't going back to work, at least not immediately.
I was worried that I was going to need surgery, which would delay my return to the paper, and also hinder any summer plans that we had made. Jimmy and I were both glad to learn that the best thing is to let the bone heal on its own if it would.
I was off from work for a week. Sitting in my recliner with my foot propped up just about drove me crazy, even more so than the fact that I could not walk without crutches. You know what they say: You don't know what you've got until it's gone.
Well, it's true. I hardly gave a thought to being able to walk across the floor until I broke my foot.
I came back to work last Monday, and while working with a broken foot has been difficult, it has been a lot better than just sitting around the house starring at a big-screen TV.
I must admit I am trying to will my foot back to health, and pushing myself to the limit.
Friday, I had the idea that I would be able to walk without my crutches, and I did for about an hour, but my foot began to throb. That's when I realized that you can't wish a broken bone healed. You have to give it time, and stay off it.
Now, I have pretty much accepted the fact that I am going to be sporting crutches for the next few weeks or so.
Maybe when I go back to the doctor in mid-July, he will have good news for me regarding my injury.
Until then, I will just keep hobbling along in order to bring the news to you.
