Council votes on 43 speed limit increase

Motorists along Highway 43 through Russellville are inching closer to being able to add 10 more miles per hour to their maximum speed limit.
The Russellville City Council voted Monday night to adopt an ordinance proposed to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) late last year, which would increase the speed limit from Hester Heights to the Russellville Marketplace from 45 miles per hour to 55.
Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett stressed that the ordinance still has to be presented back to ALDOT, who will have to sign off on it one more time before the speed limit increase actually takes effect.
Should the measure pass the state, the speed limit would drop back down to 45 through town until motorists get to the Frosty Inn, where it would go back up to 55.
