Belgreen wins First Place at County Envirothon

Belgreen High School won top prize at this year's Franklin County Envirothon held Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Northwest Shoals Community College.
Russellville High School won second place and Red Bay took home the third place prize in the competition.
"This [winning the Franklin County competition] is such a joy to me because we will be able to complete with bigger schools [during the state Envirothon competition],' Cindy Fleming, Belgreen's Envirothon sponsor, said.
Belgreen's students will compete at the statewide competition, held at the 4-H Center in Columbiana, in April. Last year, Belgreen won third place in the state competition, and has in years past taken home the first place prize, Fleming said.
The winner of the state competition will represent Alabama at the National Envirothon, Clement said.
Each team was tested on their knowledge. They worked together and then were graded to see who had the best scores, Robert Clement, Franklin County Soil &Water Conservation Department, said.
After the test, each team was given a problem and one hour to complete a solution to that problem. The teams then had to present their solution during the presentation part of the competition, Clement said.
The Envirothon is a yearly event for county schools. Training is held each year, usually in the outdoor classroom at Red Bay. However, this year's training day was held at the Frog Pond Community Center because of rainy weather, Clement said.
